Winter Limnology: How do Hydrodynamics and Biogeochemistry Shape Ecosystems Under Ice?

چکیده
The ice-cover period in lakes is increasingly recognized for its distinct combination of physical and biological phenomena ecological relevance. Knowledge gaps exist where research areas hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry biology intersect. For example, density-driven circulation under ice coincides with an expansion the anoxic zone, but abiotic biotic controls on oxygen depletion have not been disentangled, while heterotrophic microorganisms migrating phytoplankton often thrive at oxycline, extent to which processes induce fluxes heat substrates that support under-ice food webs uncertain. Similarly, increased irradiance spring can promote growth motile or, if radiatively driven convection occurs, more nutritious diatoms, links between functional trait selection, trophic transfer zooplankton fish, prevalence microbial versus classical seasonally ice-covered remain unclear. Under-ice cascade into from ice-free season, are relevant annual cycling energy carbon through aquatic webs. Understanding coupling state transitions reorganization hierarchies essential predicting complex ecosystem responses climate change. In this interdisciplinary review we describe existing knowledge winter parallel developments ecology. We then illustrate interactions these processes, identify extant present (novel) methods address outstanding questions.

Sea Ice Biogeochemistry: A Guide for Modellers
Sea ice is a fundamental component of the climate system and plays a key role in polar trophic food webs. Nonetheless sea ice biogeochemical dynamics at large temporal and spatial scales are still rarely described. Numerical models may potentially contribute integrating among sparse observations, but available models of sea ice biogeochemistry are still scarce, whether their relevance for prope...
متن کاملHow Do Organizational Capabilities Shape Industry Dynamics?
This paper aims to reconcile the logic behind stochastic models of firm growth and the notion of organizational capabilities as drivers of economic performance. In the proposed behavioral model of bounded rational firms, two mechanisms drive growth: independent stochastic growth of individual opportunities and the process by which firms capture new opportunities. To extend the stochastic framew...
متن کاملUnderstanding Selenium Biogeochemistry in Engineered Ecosystems: Transformation and Analytical Methods
Selenium is used extensively in many industries, and it is necessary for human nutrition. On the other hand, it is also toxic at slightly elevated concentrations. With the advent of industrialisation, selenium concentrations in the environment due to anthropogenic activities have increased. Treatment of selenium-laden wastewaters and bioremediation are of increasing importance for counteracting...
متن کاملHow do polar marine ecosystems respond to rapid climate change?
Climate change will alter marine ecosystems; however, the complexity of the food webs, combined with chronic undersampling, constrains efforts to predict their future and to optimally manage and protect marine resources. Sustained observations at the West Antarctic Peninsula show that in this region, rapid environmental change has coincided with shifts in the food web, from its base up to apex ...
